The Waterfront Kayak Club was formed in 2007 when Rod Larkin and Barry Flanagan were taking out their own Kayaks on the river. From these outings, Ron Hancock, Vlad Vuk, Louis Van Wyk and Dave Behrens became the nucleus of the Kayak Club and from there it grew to what it is today. Originally there were 3 boats, two small craft which we rarely use these days, and the double kayak. Courtesy of Payce, we added six ocean-going Scuppers which are sit-on boats and three Emotion kayaks which are sit-in boats. Some members have purchased their own boats and when we have all out we are a flotilla of fourteen or fifteen boats.
Regular paddles are on the Parramatta River to Gladesville, Five Dock, Cabarita Kiosk and The Armory Cafe. Boats can now be taken by trailer to Akuna Bay on the picturesque Coal and Candle Creek paddling from there to Cottage Point, a distance of 9 KM there and back. A feature of these outings is that non-paddling partners come along and join us for morning tea at Cottage Point before they return to Akuna by road where we all have lunch together in the restaurant on the Marina.
Other venues have been Georges River, Roseville to the Spit or, for beginners, we launch at Rhodes and paddle from there to the wrecks in the bay.
The Kayak Club runs the Community BBQ each Friday night which is our fund raising venture for new equipment and some charity donations.
Paddles take place most Saturdays (weather permitting).
. Meet at 7.30am behind Pulse Gym to Load boats for transport
. Unload at the venue and paddle to a coffee stop then return
. Return to Pulse and Unload.
We are affiliated with Paddle NSW and all participants on the day are insured against accident while loading and unloading. Insurance on the water is up to the individual.
We provide boats, paddles and PFD. Paddlers need their own wet shoes, hat and kayak gloves.
At the moment, membership is free but from 1 July 2020, we will charge $50/year for membership.
You can join the club on any Friday Night at the Community BBQ. Just see Jill or Anita or make an enquiry to Johnno on 0414 712 336. To book a paddle or for more information, please email Anita at firstname.lastname@example.org
